Before you set off
• I check the weather forecast – it can change quickly in the mountains, ☀️
• Make sure everyone is properly kitted out for the season (good-quality walking boots, waterproof and warm clothing, gloves and a hat, sunglasses and sun cream, a hat, and a pair of walking poles), 🕶️
• I’ll pack water, a snack and a walking map or guidebook in my rucksack, 💧
• I let my friends and family know my route. 📞
In the mountains, and even more so in the Nature Reserve, it’s important to follow certain rules
• I stick to the marked routes without taking any shortcuts and share the path with mountain bikers and horse riders (who are not permitted in the Nature Reserve), 🚲
• I close gates to livestock enclosures and walk around the herd, 🐄
• I do not pick flowers, plants or any protected mineral resources, 🌷
• I do not disturb the local wildlife, 🦅
• I do not camp, light fires or leave any rubbish behind, ♻️
• I keep my dog on a lead; dogs are strictly prohibited in the Nature Reserve. 🦮
Pastoralism
In summer, our activities such as hiking and mountain biking take place alongside the economic activities of the mountain pastures. Shepherds and their flocks head for the mountain huts and high-altitude pastures to spend the season there and maintain these vast natural spaces. To protect their animals, shepherds use often impressive guard dogs known as ‘patous’.
Developing the right habits
In the mountain pastures, you are guests on the Patous’ territory!
When you come across herds and guard dogs, here are a few things to bear in mind:
• Give the herd a wide berth and keep your distance
• Stop whilst the patous assess you; stay calm, do not stroke them, and do not threaten them: the patous will move away of their own accord
• If you’re cycling: get off your bike and walk alongside it
• Your dog must be kept on a lead
• Always make sure you close any gates behind you as you pass through them
